October 17 is black poetry day, Follow the links below to learn about some Africian Americans who have and still do contrbute to this genre.

Mr. Donn's site contains a three day study of Langston Hughe's poetry, but contains links further down the page for further study. The link above is included, geared towards 6th-10th graders.

Phyllis Wheatley (1753?-1784)

The first major Black poet, Wheatley's 1773 work was the second book published by an American woman.
